The President stunned Republicans and conservatives in the country when he announced that he had made a deal with the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and fund Hurricane Harvey relief.
Personally, I hate the fact that he agreed to raise the debt ceiling, but it’s a small price to pay for the future. Trump has, for a long time, said that he’d be willing to work with Democrats if Republicans don’t cooperate with him. On Wednesday, he proved he’d be willing to do just that.
Obviously, this annoyed just about any Republican and conservative in the country. No doubt, people will believe that Trump is shifting towards the Left… which is a horrible misconception. Trump is not an ideologue. He's a DOER. He doesn’t see Chuck Schumer the same way we conservatives do: as a socialist whack-job.
However, with Trump, there is always more than meets the eye with everything he does. Trump working with Democrats on this is of no big issue to me. So we have to raise the debt ceiling again. Big deal! Obama was doing it at every turn he could! And Republicans in Congress supported HIM. Now, it’s not a good thing to do that, since piling on debt like we were with Obama will ultimately bankrupt the country (as was Obama’s plan, undoubtedly). But this compromise didn’t give up too much - Republicans would have raised the debt ceiling anyway. Or do you have any doubts about that?
This compromise shows the Republican establishment that Trump is willing to work with the Democrats, provided that the deals he makes with them put America first. In this case, Trump is putting the VICTIMS of hurricanes Harvey and Irma FIRST. He wanted to SECURE FUNDING for the victims - something that Trump, obviously, didn't trust Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan would do. At this point, would you TRUST Republicans in Congress to get ANYTHING done?
Now, we KNOW the Democrats want to harm the country and destroy it. But Trump is not dumb. He won’t agree to anything that will damage the country just to spite the Republican establishment.
But by doing this, he tells the Republicans that they aren’t the only show in town. Huckabee put it best. In an interview on Fox News, Gov. Mike Huckabee utterly slammed Republicans for not doing anything with the power that We the People have given them. “Eight months, Republicans have had both houses. They’ve been able to get nothing done.” In reality, they are more than capable of getting things done, they just don’t want to. But I get what he’s saying here. “Look, no Obamacare repeal, no tax reform, nothing of great consequence. They passed a few insignificant bills but nothing significant.”
“So the president yesterday basically said I’m going to send a message to you the Republicans which is: if you won’t work with me and give me the most fundamental things that you the Republicans promised the American people, I’ll see what the Democrats are willing to do.”
Trump is telling the Republicans that he doesn’t need them to get things done. And that he’s willing to compromise on certain things to ultimately help the American people. The problem with that is HE’S DEALING WITH DEMOCRATS!
No Democrat will ever vote in favor of repealing DACA (which was an illegal executive order by Obama, which Trump has full power to roll back, but he chooses to let Congress deal with it). No Democrat will ever vote in favor of building a wall across the southern border without cutting a deal with Trump. No Democrat will ever likely vote in favor of tax reform without cutting a deal with Trump. No Democrat wants to Make America Great Again...but Republicans apparently don't want this either...
And Trump knows this (or at least SHOULD know this, by now, with all the hate he receives from the Left). Democrats HATE America. So Trump isn’t dealing with them just to spite the Republicans or because he is shifting towards a liberal view. He’s doing this to warn Republicans that they are not the only ones that Trump can work with.
Trump has gone against both Democrats and Republicans that don’t want to work with him to Make America Great Again. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are two prominent Republican traitors that don’t want to Make America Great Again. Jeff Flake is another, more recent example of a Republican who is really a Democrat in disguise.
Trump doesn’t care about either political party (frankly, neither do I). He couldn’t care less if Republicans or Democrats run Congress. It’s just that he’d rather see Republicans run Congress because he’s more likely to find people he can work with for the same goals in the Republican Party. He should be able to find more conservatives (true conservatives, that is) in the Republican Party than in the Democrat Party.
And he knows his base is largely conservative, with all of them wanting to Make America Great Again. But Trump won’t focus on what letter is next to someone’s name in Congress. He will focus on a person’s intentions and goals and whether they are willing to Make America Great Again.
Don’t misunderstand, Trump is entirely aware that Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer don’t want what he wants. After all, THEY ARE BOTH WITH OBAMA! But Trump is also a businessman. He knows that you have to compromise on certain things to get what you want. This time, he decided to compromise on the debt ceiling. This didn't need to happen, but Republicans in Congress have put Trump in this position.
Make no mistake, he will NEVER compromise on something that will Make America Great Again. If he’s making a deal with the Democrats and they tell him that Trump has to give up amnesty or the Wall, he will walk out of the deal immediately. He won’t compromise on things that will make it impossible to fulfill his campaign promises and slogan.
Do I think he did the right thing by working a deal with the Democrats? Only this time. I don’t trust Democrats. They are hateful, dishonest, and deceitful and will stop at nothing to destroy Trump and destroy this country. But with this deal, Trump didn’t give up anything Republicans in Congress wouldn't have given up anyway, and the Republicans are aware that Trump is willing to go around them to get his way.
Republicans need to wake up to the fact that they really don't have a base - Trump is the one who has a base. Pelosi, Bernie, Hillary, Obama and the rest of the Democrats have a base. But Republicans in Congress don't - they're on the path of extinction. They're self destructing.
But you have to ask: what does this mean for 2018? Does this mean that Democrats will regain either of the houses? Does this mean that Republicans will likely lose power that they never wanted in the first place? I don’t know for sure, since it’s too early to tell. What I do know is that the American people are sick and tired of Republicans who don’t do anything and Democrats acting as though they still own Congress, when they technically don’t.
That’s certainly how I feel. One year from now, I will look at who is running for Congress in my state and evaluate whether they seem as though they will work with the President to Make America Great Again, or if they will simply whine and moan that they can’t do things WHEN THEY VERY CLEARLY CAN! I certainly won’t vote for a Democrat, unless that Democrat is willing to Make America Great Again.
I have seen social media pages titled “Democrats 4 Trump” or something along those lines. And I know FOR A FACT that people were disenfranchised by Hillary Clinton. She is the most rejected woman in America, after all. And I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to find registered Democrats who, after 8 years of Obama, realized that he did nothing good for the country and that Trump offered FAR better solutions than Hillary did.
Do I know whether Republicans will retain power in Congress? No. What I do know is that, if they are unwilling to work with the President, and therefore unwilling to work FOR US, then they won’t get my vote.
If Trump had a political party of his own (say, the Trump Party), then I would register in a heartbeat and only vote for “Trumpers”. Now, I’m not so naïve as to assume that if they say they will work with the President, I would immediately believe them. But a “Trumper” would likely be more willing to actually WORK with the President than either of the current political parties.
Too bad the Trump Party is not an actual thing.
