USA Today published an article earlier this week in which they state that hijab is a symbol of ‘resistance and feminism’. The newspaper quotes University of Maryland Student Sameeha Ahmad: ‘I do believe hijab supports feminism – the way you look at it from a religious perspective, it empowers you by strengthening your relationship with God. It’s a step you are taking to further yourself within your own religion’. If only dear Sameeha knew that wearing a hijab doesn’t really take you to heaven… Only FAITH takes you to heaven. You see, all religions – except the Christian religion – are WRONG when it comes to salvation. They require all sorts of actions or rules which, if you follow them ‘religiously’, will take you to heaven. For example, jihadists kill ‘infidels’ because they’re taught that such criminal action is pleasing to their god, Allah. And maybe it is – except Allah is just not God. He may be Muslim’s god but Allah is not THE God. God doesn't want you to kill people...'Thou Shalt Not Kill', remember? Another example: secularists, for the most part, think that as long as they’re doing good things in their lives (saving the planet, feeding the poor, protesting against the world’s injustices) they’ll go to heaven when they die. All these works, they think, are a sure ticket to heaven… But you see, that’s not what the Bible teaches. Some 500 years ago there was a revolution in the Church which led to Protestantism – Martin Luther, the Catholic monk, was consumed with guilt because no matter what he did he didn’t feel close to God. He was an incredibly smart guy – he had been in law school. As the good law student that he was, Luther studied the Bible endlessly…and he discovered what now the Reformed Church teaches: Justification by Faith alone. Justification by Faith alone is shorthand for … JUSTIFICATION BY CHRIST ALONE. You see, all it takes to get you to heaven is FAITH. Faith in Jesus Christ – He was born from a virgin and He died on the cross FOR OUR SINS, and He raised from the dead three days later. Once you’ve intellectually accepted the Truth in the paragraph above, you’re a Christian and you go to heaven. All you have to do is BELIEVE it’s true. You may say – ‘wait a minute. That’s just too easy!’ Is it? Think about the other religions – in Islam, you have to kill infidels to please their 'god'. Do you think killing infidels is easier than believing that Jesus is your Lord and Savior? Or think about secularism - they think they have to do all these works and not sin to go to heaven. They think, ‘if there is a heaven, surely God is going to let me in simply because I’m such a good person and I don’t sin’. You don’t sin? Are you sure? How many times a day do you have a violent or sinful THOUGHT? I hate to break it to you, but even a sinful THOUGHT is a sin. If you’re thinking right now of having sex with someone who’s not your spouse, you’re sinning right this very minute. If you’re insulting someone, you’re sinning. If you love money more than God, you’re sinning. Do you think NOT sinning is easier than believing that Jesus is your Lord and Savior? My friend, if you don't believe in Jesus you’re going to believe anything else. Like the student in the USA Today article – she believes the hijab will get her closer to God and the newspaper thinks it’s a symbol of feminism. Most conservatives would see right through the lie. But if you don’t believe Jesus is your Lord and Savior, then you’re likely to believe anything and everything else – from environmentalism to humanism to Buddhism. Even if you don’t believe the hijab is taking you to heaven, you run the risk of believing that just by being a good person you’re guaranteed to go to heaven. And that’s simply NOT TRUE. Friend, if you don’t agree with the student, that’s fine. You’re smart enough to know the hijab isn’t the ticket to heaven. But if you still think doing good works takes you to heaven, you’re sorely mistaken. Only Jesus can take you to heaven. 2 Timothy 1-9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.
