If you know anything about world history, you know that in some countries tyrannical regimes shut down or dissolve their version of “Congress” or “Parliament” to advance their tyrannical agendas. Several countries have done this over the years, including murderous regimes in Latin America, for example. In fact, last year there was a report that indicated that Peru was the Latin American country with the highest level of popular support for the dissolution of Congress, with nearly 60% approval rating. More mature societies, on the other hand, know that a good system of checks and balances is best (essential!) to ensure liberties are not trampled on. So typically, while there may be some level of popular support for the dissolution of congress in some less mature countries, you will NOT find any member of Congress in those countries who would agree with such action.
Then comes Pelosi, who’s done absolutely nothing for Americans since she’s become the Speaker of the House (or at any point since she became a politician). And what does she say? She says Congress is not essential. Not in quite those words, but this is what she meant by not showing up for work and rejecting COVID-19 testing for members of Congress.
Is she this lazy or is she just dumb? Do you have any idea the effort it takes for me to not say “Fine! Dissolve the House, since they’re not willing to work! Let the grown ups get the job done!”. There’s a part of me who wants to shout this statement out, but the more rational part of me knows it’s not a good idea, if we’re to keep those checks and balances intact. You see, I’m trying to say that popular support for the dissolution of Congress is not good for the people in the long run, no matter how non-essential the House currently is and no matter how much popular support dissolving it altogether gains. It’d be a bad deal for all of us – worse than what we have today, as useless as this House is.
Here’s what Speaker Pelosi said during an interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN, when the CNN host asked her “why not have them?” referring to the COVID-19 tests to go back to work in Washington DC:
“The fact is, is that we have said that the tests should go to those on the front line who have direct communication with -- contending with this. Our physician, our Capitol physician, has said we don't need to have them in terms of exposure that we have. We are not -- the testing organization said to us, you're not next. We can bump you in line and push other people out of the way, but you're not -- you're not next in terms of essential workers for this.
So, if any individual member, in their own privacy -- I'm not going into their lives -- has a need for a test, then that's up to the doctor to determine. But we're not going to say -- we have -- we have custodians in the Capitol.
We have people who work with thousands of people who make the Congress function, making this happen, again, protecting us, as well as keeping it safe in terms of this virus.
But outside, and our first responders and the rest, they should be getting this before we do. And I don't know there's one member of Congress who says, 'I want to have a test before my constituent who really needs one gets one, because I should be more important than that.'”
So Nancy Pelosi doesn’t believe Congress does essential work. Well, we know her House doesn’t, given she has spent most of the time there just trying to impeach the President or launch ridiculous, pointless and wasteful investigations. I would agree with her that her agenda for the House is, indeed, non-essential. She wastes time and tax dollars.
But the bigger question is: why not go back to work and at least pretend she cares? After all she herself said in the quote above that “our Capitol physician has said we don’t need to have them in terms of exposure that we have”. What this convoluted sentence means is that the Capitol physician doesn’t believe any of the members of the House have had enough exposure to the virus to justify a test. THEREFORE, the Capitol physician tacitly is giving Speaker Pelosi the green light to go back to work.
But, she refuses…
If she’s afraid someone in the House has contracted the virus, she should have everybody tested…and THEN GO BACK TO WORK!
If she’s not afraid because the Capitol doctor is telling her there’s nothing to worry about, she should reopen the House and GO BACK TO WORK!
You see, no matter how she feels about the safety of the workplace, every indication leads to the only possible conclusion that it’s SAFE TO GO BACK TO WORK!
But it’s things like these that give us a call to action for all of us who love America. We cannot tolerate this level of laziness and lack of compassion and desire to work for us in Congress. We must absolutely give Republicans a big win in November such that we keep the WH, keep the Senate and win back the House and retire lazy Pelosi once and for all.
