It looks like the Mexican President may feel offended by Trump’s executive order to build the southern wall. President Pena Nieto decided to cancel his meeting with US President Donald Trump and suggested Mexico is facing the ‘biggest threat from its Northern neighbor since WWI’. I lived in Mexico for 5 years – I love its people, its beaches and its history. But let me tell you what I learnt in those 5 years – the Mexican government thinks Mexicans have a RIGHT to come to America, documented or not. You see, they do have a wall in their southern border with Guatemala. The Trump wall in an of itself isn't the issue. The key issue here is they’re still mad about losing California, Texas, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado – they feel these territories were unfairly taken from them and therefore they’re claiming them back by virtue of invasion. The Mexican government actually PROMOTES the invasion. Mexican politicians are unable or unwilling to build a country that enables its own people to prosper and live freely, so their only solution is to get their people to cross the border and look for better opportunities here. Combine the lack of opportunity at home and the feeling of loss of Mexican territory to the US and you get a perfect recipe for mass invasion. When Mexicans come in, their mindset is not that of most of us, immigrants – they don’t come in to assimilate. Since their goal is to correct a historic mistake and retake lost territory, they have no interest in learning English, following the law, singing The Star-Spangled Banner or waving our flag. Since this migration is in fact an invasion, sooner or later, they hope, Spanish will be widely spoken and the Mexican flag will fly again…in essence, they’re trying to bring Mexico back into these lost territories. I’m an immigrant myself – from Argentina. Never in a million years did I consider NOT assimilating to the US. I’ve learnt the language, I’ve become a US citizen and I was incredibly emotional during the naturalization ceremony - something that was surprising to me because I thought I was so cool about it. Assimilation is key to prosperity and THE WAY to pay RESPECTS to the country that’s taking us in. I’m GRATEFUL to this country and to GOD for placing me here - and I’m PROUD to be an American. Unfortunately, that’s not the way most Mexicans feel when they cross the border illegally. As most of my readers know, I’m a Christian and I try to find Biblical solutions to our problems. The Bible does actually speak about immigration. It says that, while it’s true that we need to love and receive foreigners, there’s an obligation on the part of the immigrant: to follow the law. Leviticus 18:26 says: ‘You must obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. This applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you’. The Mexican government bakes into its budget the fact that millions of their own people migrate to the US. They have no intention to build an inclusive economy where they themselves solve Mexico’s problems. The expectation is, given the US snatched the northern part of what used to be Mexico from their hands, that Mexico’s old enemy will take care of their 'unwanted Mexicans'. They don’t want these people in Mexico. They want us to take them in. That, my friend, is the sad truth. The challenge for Mexico at this point is to come to the realization that the US will no longer be taking illegal Mexicans. And they need to understand that it’s time to grow up and start creating an economy that’s inclusive of ALL Mexicans. This has never been a priority to the Mexican government. They must accept the fact that these Mexicans are not our problem – they're theirs. We have problems of our own. Now, having said that, whether the Mexican government accepts this fact or not should be completely irrelevant to us. Hopefully, they’ll get it and will course correct – and, who knows? Maybe they’ll be able to actually prosper – all by themselves. That’d be wonderful. But to OUR government the priority is the safety of our own people. The wall is not meant to keep Mexicans out – it’s meant to keep TERRORISTS and CRIMINALS out. And to make it more difficult for anyone crossing the border illegally. It’s a common sense approach to a complicated problem. We all lock the doors of our homes to keep the bad guys out. This is no different. Numbers 15:30 The person who does anything presumptuously, whether he is native-born or a stranger, that one brings reproach to the LORD and he shall be cut off from among his people
