Earlier this week, President Donald Trump met with Congressional lawmakers to discuss immigration, DACA and the Wall. During this meeting, the President made some comments that have conservatives worried he might surrender DACA and perhaps the biggest item that got him elected: the Wall at the southern border.
The President said that he’d be willing to sign anything that comes from Congress about immigration, and you can clearly see why that has conservatives and Trump supporters worried.
Conservatives like Mark Levin, Ann Coulter and James Woods have voiced their opinions after the televised meeting.
Mark Levin played a clip of what the President said: “And, Chuck, I will say, when this group comes back – hopefully with an agreement – this group and others from the Senate, from the House, comes back with an agreement, I’m signing it. I mean, I will be signing it. I’m not going to say, ‘Oh, gee, I want this or I want that.’ I’ll be signing it, because I have a lot of confidence in the people in this room that they’re going to come up with something really good.”
Then, Levin voiced his concern: “That’s no Art of the Deal, that’s complete surrender. Now I suspect the President will realize that and try to talk some of that back, but that is very bad.”
Ann Coulter went on a twitter rant about how this will hurt the President, saying: “Trump, flanked by Dems & open-borders GOPS, announces plan for 100% open-ended amnesty (per courts).” “But don’t worry! There will be ‘border security’! (Political euphemism for: You’re not getting a wall.)” “This DACA lovefest confirms a main thesis of Michael Wolff’s book: When Bannon left, liberal Dems Jared, Ivanka, Cohn & Goldman Sachs took over.” “After agreeing with DiFi (Agency for Public Management and eGovernment) that stand-alone DACA will come FIRST, Trump’s muscle memory kicks in & he cites Israel saying NOTHING BUT A WALL WILL WORK.” Finally ending with: “Nothing Michael Wolff could say about Donald Trump has hurt him as much as the DACA lovefest right now.”
And conservative actor James Woods also went on a bit of a rant, saying: “If you fold on immigration, you are a one term president.” “That’s it. If Trump rolls over on DACA, he loses my vote. That is a promise.” “End DACA completely, build the wall, defund sanctuary cities, end chain migration, enforce voter ID, and deport all lawbreakers. Democrats never listened to us when they were in control. Wake up, Republicans. You have the power. Use it, for God’s sake!”
That’s a lot of things to say. Because of that, I won’t break down and analyze every single thing they said, as that would make this article far too long.
Let’s just take the most significant comments from each.
Levin said that this is surrendering to the Democrats on DACA and immigration reform. That may be so on the outset, but I have a little more faith in the President than that. He’s not the idiot the Left and MSM make him out to be. He’s a thinker. A strategist. And most importantly in this case, a negotiator.
Levin mentioned the Art of the Deal, the book Trump wrote. It’s precisely BECAUSE he wrote the Art of the Deal that I trust him to make the best deal he can make on this. He knows a bad deal when he sees it. He’s not going to fold on this issue just so the Democrats and the media will like him. He knows who got him elected. He knows what his supporters want.
None of us want DACA. None of us want chain migration. None of us want open borders. We want an end to DACA, an end to chain migration, to that stupid lottery system and most of all, WE WANT A WALL!
But you have to remember, Trump himself is the very person who brought up the Wall. That’s been his biggest promise that Congress hasn’t allowed him to fulfill. While many of the other promises he’s fulfilled or is in the process of fulfilling (stronger economy, bringing back jobs, defeating ISIS), promises like the Wall are beyond the executive branch and for good reason.
While I believe many of the things he says on many issues, I don’t believe that he will simply sign anything that’s brought to his desk. That would guarantee that he becomes a one-term president, as Woods said. Again, he’s not dumb.
Next, we have Ann Coulter. She has had a history of making very explosive tweets in the past. Back in September of 2017, we were in a similar position. Trump had seemingly softened on DACA and conservatives, particularly Ann, exploded over his comments. If you remember, she had tweeted: “At this point, who DOESN’T want Trump impeached?” Remember what happened afterwards? Nothing.
No change was made on the DACA decision, which is why Democrats and some RINOs are still fighting for it today.
Now, she does make one good point. Nothing Michel Wolff could say could hurt Trump more than what Trump could say or do. I believe there are only two beings in existence that can destroy Trump: God and Trump himself.
Again I find myself making this point: he’s not an idiot. He’s not going to self-destruct.
One of the reasons he tweets so much is so that he can maintain contact with regular Americans as much as he can. The media is full of lies. He knows he can’t trust them, so he chooses to use a direct network with his millions of followers. He has paid attention. He knows what his supporters want. We want to Make America Great Again and building the Wall will be a major step towards doing so. He knows this very well.
Now, you may be asking: “Why would he essentially promise to sign anything that comes to his desk?”
I’ll be the first to tell you that I don’t know for sure, mostly because I’m not Trump and don’t know what he thinks all the time. But there’re some possibilities.
Possibility #1: To ditch the “divisive” association made to him in a show of solidarity with members of Congress. Even Senator Jeff Flake said that the meeting was far more constructive than he expected it to be and he was “impressed” by the President’s flexibility. For the first time in a long time, the media reports positively about him.
Possibility #2: To get members of Congress to attend his State of the Union address later this month so that they may directly listen to what he has to say, to the accomplishments he’s made in the last year and perhaps to further drive his desire to build the Wall. Trump is a showman. He enjoys an audience. He might want these people to pay close attention to what he wants and what he looks to do this calendar year 2018.
Possibility #3: To show that it’s possible for Congress to work together and get something done. During the campaign trail, there were times when Trump bashed Congress for not being able to get anything done, a point which was made obvious throughout 2017. He might want to make an example out of them by showing the American people and members of Congress that when united, Congress can achieve plenty of things. Perhaps this is merely to put pressure on Congress to pass more MAGA legislation in the future. Personally, I don’t think that would work, but Trump may be looking to see what he can get Congress to do.
I’ll grant you, those are not the only possibilities. It’s entirely possible that none of these are right or only a bit of all of them is right, but we won’t know until the President does or doesn’t do something on this issue.
Now, notice how I don’t mention him folding on immigration as a possibility. That’s because of the very point I’ve been making throughout this article: he’s not dumb. He’s not dumb enough to abandon his base. He knows Democrats will still try to impeach him and when that fails, to defeat him in 2020. I seriously doubt he’s simply looking to be well-liked by the enemy. And I seriously doubt he’d be looking to do that through surrendering everything he stands for.
I think he’s done enough great things to Make America Great Again throughout his tenure as President to warrant a little faith in the guy. He’s often shown to be witty and, to use his own words, a “very stable genius”. And while the Left mocks him for that, it’s a very truthful statement.
I have faith that Trump will not concede to the Democrats and accept whatever deal they want. He’s not going to let them scam him.
