America is a nation of immigrants. Historically, we have received people from all corners of the world – some fleeing war, some fleeing oppression, some fleeing extreme poverty – all of them seeking freedom and opportunity.
With the Trump Administration soon to be sworn in, immigration has become a hot button issue. People are reacting emotionally about Trump’s policies and are not really thinking what we really ought to do as a nation. Focusing on what might or might not happen, having a ‘the sky is falling’ attitude doesn’t help anyone, particularly those who claim to be concerned.
So let’s start tackling the issue.
People don’t know what to think about immigration – should we be compassionate towards immigrants? Should we help them out? Legal and illegal? Should we receive them? Should we restrict immigration?
With terrorism surging all these questions are valid questions...
...we want to be compassionate, but we want to be safe as well.
So what’s the right thing to do?
Before I give you an answer, let me tell you my friend, that the issue of immigration is not a partisan issue. Politicians who don’t understand right from wrong will not solve the problem and they won’t give you an answer.
The answer to the immigration issue is really in the most important book you will ever read. You know this book – it’s existed for thousands and thousands of years. Right now you can’t find it in our public schools, but you can download it online. Chances are, however, you have a copy at home already.
Personally I have many copies – one in each of my smart phones, in my eBook reader and three printed versions.
The book I’m talking about is The Bible. Yes, the Bible talks about immigration.
What does the Bible say about immigration? Like I said earlier, we want to help but we want to be safe. Can we do both?
Yes, we can. So let's see what we're supposed to do.
According to the Bible, God’s people are to:
But there's a catch, so keep reading.
Let’s discuss in more detail how the Bible says we should do these three things.
God commands acceptance of foreigners – but not any foreigners. He commands us to accept only those foreigners who are willing to accept His laws. In Leviticus God gives Israelites a number of rules they must follow.
Leviticus 18:26 says: ‘You must obey all my decrees and regulations. You must not commit any of these detestable sins. This applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you’.
The Bible has many examples of foreign-born men and women who were accepted as productive citizens of Israel. Accepting immigrants who are willing to accept God’s laws is a mandate in the Bible.
In the New Testament, there's another example of acceptance of foreigners. Jesus defied the long-standing custom of not speaking to Samaritans when in the Gospel according to John He engaged in conversation with a Samaritan woman. This conversation ultimately led to many of her Samaritan friends to come to Jesus Christ (John 4:1-26).
As you can see, the key is to only accept immigrants who are subject to the same laws as natives. Anyone coming to our country with the purpose of breaking the law should not be allowed in.
Hospitality to immigrants was crucial in ancient times, because travel was extremely treacherous.
Exodus 23:9 says: ‘You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it’s like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt’.
Helping immigrants is another mandate in the Bible.
This is the key one. We can accept immigrants who are willing to follow our laws. We can even help them out, but without the third one, immigration is never going to work.
This third mandate is CRITICAL to a prosperous, functioning society. It’s CRITICAL to the survival of such society. In the Bible, immigrants didn’t have carte blanche to do as they pleased. God gave us explicit limits to our acceptance of strangers.
Foreigners in Israel were expected to contribute to the success of the nation. There are many examples in the Bible of many immigrants contributing to their adopted land.
The message coming from the Bible is crystal clear: yes, we must accept and help immigrants, but only to the extent that they assimilate to the national culture and contribute to society.
Try explaining any of this to Democrats in power…Since they’re leftists, the idea of a prosperous America or even the survival of a Christian America is repelling to them – they want immigrants who are going to destroy our culture. Leftists care very little about our individual well-being. They have one purpose (which they share with Islamic Terrorists, by the way): the destruction of America as we know it, like they've destroyed other cultures such as in Cuba, in China, in North Korea, in Latin America (where I'm originally from) and now, in Europe. Illegal immigrants, and Islamic refugees are part of the plan. Thank God the electorate rejected it in the last election.
As you can see, my friend, as the Christian nation that we are, we’re expected to follow these Biblical rules above. Let’s bring in the people who truly love this country – and are willing to sacrifice for it. Those who are coming to break the law, or to kill us in the name of some fictitious god, shouldn’t be given the opportunity to do so on our own soil.
Let’s be compassionate and stay safe at the same time. It CAN be done!
